Airbus Unveils H140: A New Era in Helicopter Medevac Technology

In March 2025, Airbus Helicopters unveiled the H140 at VERTICON in Dallas, Texas. This new light twin-engine helicopter is designed primarily for emergency medical services (EMS) and is scheduled to enter service in 2028. The H140 features a spacious cabin accommodating up to six passengers, large windows for enhanced visibility, and rear clamshell doors for efficient patient loading. Powered by dual Safran Arrius 2E engines, it incorporates a five-blade bearingless main rotor and an optimized Fenestron tail rotor, enhancing performance and reducing noise levels.

The introduction of the H140 marks a significant advancement in medevac capabilities, offering improved performance, cost-effectiveness, and comfort for both crew and patients. Its enhanced features are expected to set new standards in the EMS sector, providing faster and safer medical transportation.

The concept of medical evacuation by helicopter, or “medevac,” has evolved considerably since its inception. The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, commonly known as the “Huey,” was among the first helicopters extensively used for medevac missions during the Vietnam War. Its deployment revolutionized battlefield medicine by significantly reducing the time to evacuate wounded soldiers, thereby increasing survival rates.

The unveiling of the H140 at VERTICON 2025 represents a continuation of this legacy, integrating modern technology and design to further enhance the effectiveness of air medical services.
